Jeanne Barret was the first woman to sail around the world in the 18th century. The famous botanist Philibert Commerson crossed her path when he hired her as a servant and fell in love with her. Together, they discovered many species of plants, flowers and herbs.
They set off to discover the world on the ship of the great explorer Monsieur de Bougainville, where she hid her femininity. It was in Brazil that the two naturalists came across a small, colourful flower, which they called Bougainvillea, out of friendship for their captain.
